Overview

Built in 1902 by United States Senator and mining magnate Thomas Kearns, this house was designed by notable Utah architect Carl M. Neuhausen, who also designed the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City. This elegant home was built using the finest materials by the finest craftsmen available, resulting in a quality and style similar to that of Eastern mansions like those of the Vanderbilts and Carnegies. This mansion has served as the residence of the active governor of Utah since 1937. A $7.8 million renovation was completed in 1996.

In a surprising move on April 1st, Governor Gary Herbert decided to sell the historic Governor’s Mansion to help cover the Utah state budget. When asked why he was selling, he said, “I’m just trying to do my part to keep the budget balanced without having to raise taxes.” The former real estate agent continued, “I saw neighbors selling their homes for a few million bucks, and I knew this place was worth way more than that, so I figured what the heck, let’s put it on the market and see if we get any bites.”

The new owners of the mansion must agree to allow Governor Herbert and his wife to stay in the mother-in-law apartment behind the mansion through the end of his term as governor.
